A Day Trip to Oxford.




When one hears about Oxford, thoughts of the famous University springs to mind. The city is home to the one of the oldest universities in the world, which has been the academy to many known and celebrated individuals.
Also, if you are an avid reader, and lover of fiction and fantasy, then Oxford is a must visit. Oxford is the place where Lewis Carroll was inspired to write Alice in Wonderland, where J.R.R. Tolkien started his work on the Lord of the Rings,  and it is also where numerous of Harry Potter movie scenes were shot!

Take a walk through the University quarters

Being able to take in all of the 38 colleges is tempting, yet impossible! However, there are a few that just cannot be missed. 

Christ Church College is the most stunning and largest college in Oxford, and a fine example of architecture. It is notable for the magnificent Tom quad and the Great Hall, which has been used in the Harry Potter films. A entry fee is required to explore this world famous site.

Divinity School, Old Bodleian Library  houses J.R.R. Tolkien's earliest manuscripts of The Lord of the Rings, and is also another of Harry Potter's shooting grounds.

Exeter College in Turl street is one of the smallest and oldest colleges in Oxford. It is where the famous author of Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien studied. This college is highly photogenic, and the Fellows' Garden offers one of the best views in Oxford.

Take "that" picture at Radcliffe Square

This is the most iconic and beautiful spot in Oxford, with the Radcliffe Camera in the centre, surrounded by the stunning facades of the Bodleian Library, Brasenose College, All Souls College and the University Church. It is the most photographed place in the city.

Stroll through Covered Market

Over 200 years old, the unique Oxford Covered Market has more than 50 independent stalls and stores, including fashion boutiques, fine jewellers, cake shops, florists, vegetable stalls and fishmongers. It also has several excellent restaurants and cafes, Sasi's Thai being a student favourite. Be sure to come across a long queue at Moo-Moo's and Ben's Cookies.

Explore the famous Museums and art galleries

Oxford is an ancient city with great history told through some of its fine museums, namely The Museum of History and SciencePitt-Rivers Museum and Ashmolean MuseumModern Art Oxford is a more contemporary outlet, with an ever-changing exhibit and collection, ranging from art and sculpture to great installations by contemporary artists.

Walk down New College lane

A walk down New College Lane gives an insight into medieval Oxford. The walk covers Hertford College’s famous ‘Bridge of Sighs’,the back gates of New College, the back of Queen’s College and St Edmund Hall, exiting on to the High Street.

Wander the historic streets 

Oxford is undoubtedly, best explored on foot. The charming streets have hidden gems that are bound to amaze. While you are at it,  don't forget to try one of their authentic ice-cream parlours.

Marvel at the souvenier shops and famous bookshops

A trip to Oxford is incomplete with some souvenier and book shopping. While Alice's Shop at St. Aldate has everything to do with Alice in Wonderland, Flaggs on Broad Street is great for amazing Harry Potter merchandise! The adjoining souvenier shops with the colleges also offer a fine range of gifts and trinklets.

Oxford University Press Bookshop on High Street and Blackwell's Bookshop on Broad Street are amazing bookshops, unique to the city of Oxford.

Due to time restriction, we failed to cover The famous Botanic Gardens and Christ Church meadows.

Whether you live here in the UK or you are traveling from outside UK, experiencing  the charming and historic Oxford should find space in your itinerary.
