Nine things to do in Nepal

Nepal is considered to be a heaven for trekkers, but the country offers something for all kinds of travellers. We visited Nepal in 2015 for 8 days, a week before the earthquakes hit. We had an enriching experience and thought of making a list for future travellers.

DISCLAIMER: This post is based completely on our personal travel experience. The list is not done in order of preference.

1. Visit a Monastery

Matepani Gumba Monastery, Matepani, Pokhara, Nepal

Many might think a monastery to be inaccessible, but it is quite the opposite and quite a must visit. There are two notable monasteries, the Kopan monastery in Kathmandu being the larger one, and the Matepani Monastery in Pokhara being the more scenic one. Matepani, with its majestic view of Pokhara and serene atmosphere, is a haven that will sooth your soul.

Tip: Visit an hour before sunset.

2. Watch the sunrise from Sarangkot

Sarangkot is an one-hour road journey from Pokhara. You can either stay there, or visit early morning for a glimpse of the magnificent sunrise. The first sun-rays hitting the Fishtail of the Annapurna range, the cool breeze, and the valleys below, will leave you speechless. Paragliding from a mountain top or a ride in a helicopter makes the experience even more worthwhile.

Tip: The people of Nepal are more than ready to help. If you are living in Pokhara, ask your hotel receptionist to help you hire a cab. The place will be packed with tourists, so leave as early as you can to secure your spot for the best view.

3. Take in the beauty of the Himalayan range from Nagarkot

Standing at 7000 ft above ground, Nagarkot gives the best view of the Himalayan range. The journey to Nagarkot is itself beautiful, with picturesque landscapes on either side of the road. Nagarkot has a fine selection of hotels, with balconies facing the breathtaking view of the Himalayas.

Tip: Best time to visit is between October-November, when the sky is more clear. Take warm clothes as the wind can be chilling to the bone.

4. See the sunset from a boat on Fewa Lake

A calming experience, you can rent a canoe with a guide or you can row it yourself. The reflection of the Annapurna range on the lake is worth taking in. Other magnificent views include the little island and the Peace Pagoda at the top of a hill. Though boat rides are available all day long, the best time is an hour before sunset.

5. Walk through the ruins of Bhaktapur

Considered by many to be the best of the three medieval city-states in the Kathmandu valley, Bhaktapur has been tremendously affected by the consecutive earthquakes in 2015. However, apparently it still remains as charming as ever.
The intricate detail in the architecture is worth taking into account. A morning visit will provide an insight into the Nepali lifestyle, as people engage in their daily chores. Also, don't forget to go round to the Potter's square, for a glimpse of their wanders.

6. Explore Kathmandu

Must Visit:

  • Durbar Square- Located in front of the old royal palace, this place is a grand affair. Don't miss a visit to the Kumari Ghar, the residing place of the living child Goddess of Kathmandu. If luck works, you might get a glimpse of her from one of the first floor windows.
  • Pashupatinath Temple- The most famous of all the temples. It is most known for it's elaborately painted Sadhus and many find the cremation ceremony a must have experience.
  • Garden Of Dreams- Located in the busiest part of Kathmandu, yet secluded from the outside world, a place to relax.
  • Boudhanath Stupa- The largest stupa in Nepal.
  • Swayambhunath Temple- Popularly known as the monkey temple.

Tip: Best way to explore Kathmandu is on foot. Careful whom you take pictures of. Some may ask for money more than the worth of the picture!

7. From Pokhara to Chitwan to Kathmandu

Chitwan is the place for all wildlife fanatics, with an amazing Safari promising the sighting of elephants, rhinos, and occasionally, the Royal Bengal Tiger. The morning bus journey from Pokhara to Kathmandu, includes a halt at Chitwan for lunch. The route is beautiful, with the amazing stretch of the Trisuli river and it's enthusiastic rafters.

8. Indulge in the great multi-cultural cuisine

There is no one cuisine that you will not find in Nepal. From the traditional Nepali Thali, to a proper English breakfast, all is available, and at a very affordable price. Don't forget to get a taste of the local masala chai and Nepalese momo.

Tip: Though the traditional Nepali Thali might seem fascinating, it is advisable not to slurge your money on it, as it might not suit everyone's taste.

9. Shop till you drop!

You can't leave Nepal without doing some affordable shopping. The streets of Thamel are full of small shops with great deals. Women might take particular interest in the divine selection of accessories and pashmina shawls.

Shop antiques:
There are some exquisite souvenirs and trinkets that will add beauty to any household.

Tip: A fair amount of bargaining skill is necessary. Start from half price!
