6 Films For 2016.

Time and again, we keep hearing that our friends don't quite like watching indian films, or Bollywood films as it is popularly known.

Personally, we have grown up watching indian films and aren't quite ashamed to admit that we see just as many indian films as western films. So we have tried to compile a list of films which we thought were deserving but unfortunately were not seen by wide audiences.

Out of the commercial/well known films this year, we loved DANGAL, UDTA PUNJAB, NEERJA and KAPOOR & SONS.



Presented alphabetically, here are the six less commercial indian films we loved in 2016.




ALIGARH








Director: Hansal MehtaStarring: Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkumar Rao



Watch out for: The performances, the subtle screenplay and realistic treatment.Indian films probably don't handle topics such as homosexuality with as much fluency, but this is a bold yet graceful perspective.

HAPPY BHAG JAYEGI




Director: Mudassar Aziz

Starring: Diana Penty, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Deol.



Watch out for: A fantastic romantic comedy with great twists and commendable performances from all the characters. The dialogues will surely keep you laughing.
DVD





Director:(Drishyam, Mumbai Meri Jaan)

Starring: Irrfan Khan, Jimmy Shergill.

Watch out for: Revenge stories are always a popular genre, but this one comes with a great plot and social relevance. And when you have an actor of Irfan's calibre and screen presence, it keeps you glued to the screen.






Starring: Swara Bhaskar, Ratna Shah Pathak, 

Watch out for: The script is the hero of the film. What a delightful little film which uplifts your spirits and inspires you. The debutant director also happens to be wife of director Nitesh Tiwari(Dangal)

PINK:

 

Director: Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury (Anuranan, Antaheen)Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Tapsee Pannu



Watch out for: Amitabh's towering performance. A skilfully written script and a strong message to take home!Amitabh Bachchan shows you why he is still one of the best actors of the country. The script is definitely the USP here. The message, quite apt for today's time, adds much value to this film.





Director: Anu Menon

Starring: Naseeruddin Shah, Kalki Koechin
Watch out for: The interaction between the principal characters- its a treat to see Nasir and Kalki share screen space. Also the treatment of a rather serious subject in such a lighthearted manner is refreshing.

Though this didn't release in 2016, we saw it this year and loved it.


SPECIAL 26




Director: Neeraj Pandey (A Wednesday, MS Dhoni)

Starring: Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill.
Watch out for: This little known film from 2013 was a great surprise. Writer/Director Neeraj Pandey's work speaks for itself.

As a photographer, I dont use zoom lenses. I have somehow been fascinated by primes for as long as I can remember. For most parts of the past 2 years or so, I have been shooting mostly with the 85mm. 4 Reasons why 85mm is a brilliant focal length:  1. Possibly the best focal length for portraits. Not too long, not too short, just about perfect.  2. A versatlie lens for weddings and lifestyle.  3. Produces the best possible bokeh( 135mm f/2 can be the only other lens as its competitor)  4. Almost no distortion,  especially compared to the 50mm.  I have owned the Nikon Version , which is slightly lighter than the Sony one, but the Sony 85mm f/1.4 outclasses any other 85mm in the market with its image quality. Coupled with the "EYE FOCUS" technology of the A7R2, it does produce excellent results most of the time. This lens, like most Sony and Fuji lenses, is razor sharp. Somehow, it also exudes a dreamy effect on the photos, especially wide open at f/1.4

A Day Trip to Oxford.

W hen one hears about Oxford, thoughts of the famous University springs to mind. The city is home to the one of the oldest universities in the world, which has been the academy to many known and celebrated individuals. Also, i f you are an avid reader, and lover of fiction and fantasy, then Oxford is a must visit. Oxford is the place   where Lewis Carroll was inspired to write   Alice in Wonderland , where   J.R.R. Co-incidentally Colombo

I was a first year undergrad architecture student when I had tumbled upon the name of Architect Geoffrey Bawa in a Graphics class. His intricate hand drawn elevations,  style of work and huge contribution to what is today known as "tropical modernism" intrigued me. Since then, I had always wanted to visit Sri Lanka, just to be able to walk through one of his creations. In fourth year, I had decided I would do my internship under a Sri Lankan firm in hopes of fulfilling my wanderlust. I had gone as far as to applying for it and getting a positive reply in return, when my parents had banished all my hopes by disagreeing to let me leave alone.  When Adnan came up with the plan of attending a friend's wedding in Colombo,  before heading to UK for his masters, I was thrilled! This trip would fulfill two of my desires, one being a walk through Geoffrey Bawa's creation, the other being the opportunity to attend a Christian wedding in a foreign count
